The MIDI enabled keyboard is pretty much 90% of the way a musician uses a computer.  Performance input into MIDI has many parameters that the keyboard was made to control.  Drum pads and other more novel type instruments have a niche market, but any musician that wants to get serious about using technology in their music needs to have a strong "functional" skill set to talk the talk.  It's not having to be a great player as much as it is knowing basic performance skills and the many other "sys-ex" controls that the keyboard has to offer!
