Treasure Valley Loses a Great School

Below is a brief story about a very special arts academy here in the treasure valley that was making a difference.  If you're not from this area or don't particularly have a student (or yourself) you'd like to have take our workshops, you can go to our application and sponsor a student.  We will offer your sponsorship to one of the former Fresco students that are still committed to studying with Justin Nielson as highlighted in the article below.  That would be awesome!

Fresco Arts Academy, one of the true shining stars in charter high school arts education, was sold to the Meridian School District and stripped of all it's real purposeful music and arts function.  We have helped out from time to time in the development and growth of the school since it started as a private teaching facility.  Ken and Mary Cenell had a vision that was built around their son-in-law, Justin Nielson, one of the most talented pianist and dedicated educators we've met.

They took their modest ranch style house in Eagle, Idaho and started turning it into a teaching facility.  Their bedrooms got divided and made into lesson cubicles.  Their kitchen was a gathering place.  Their front livingroom became a waiting and conference room.  Their family room was now a recital hall.  Even their own master bedroom got walled off to make one more cubicle.  It was named Rivendell and was wildly successful.  But Ken and Mary had bigger visions...always centered around the rare talents of Justin, and it paid off.  Not in money but in the success of taking young students with a passion and making them real, great performers.

Jump forward 15 years and the Cenell's vision went from Rivendell to a brand new commercial complex anchored by a beautiful 3 story school that would make a huge difference in hundreds of students lives.  It was then called ArtsWest...still led by Justin's unending passion and energy and employing faculty and staff who shared his educational vision.

The last 7 years ArtsWest was called Fresco and became part of the charter school system.  Everyday there was a tangable buzz in and around the school of students really wanting to learn, and it showed by producing off-the-map educational results.  Test scores that made the surrounding public schools pale in comparison.

But in true corporate fashion, even though the three main funding resources combined equalled unimaginable wealth, running any business at a loss was not in their DNA.  Fresco would have eventually reached critical mass and begun to turn a profit, but there's no denying the marginal bottom line "negative numbers" were still in the red.

So away it goes, hoisted on the taxpayers in the Meridian School District, stripped of all special sauce that made it perfect, leaving many talented faculty out of a job because they did not fit the rank and file of unionized public school teachers and antiquated education administation.  It's now a magnet school and will never be the same even though the spin is whirling at tornado type velocity attempting to position that "the change will keep the school everything it was."  To date, there has been one music teacher hired.

What of the three deep pocket investors?  The commercial developer continues to erect large buildings that are lucky to get 30% occupancy (like every other commercial property in the area).  The network marketing giants are putting the final touches on their monumental world headquarters just down the street and the toy inventor still collects millions from a well-known invention he developed years ago.

...and Justin...he is once again figuring out a way he can keep his students moving forward, undaunted by the task ahead because for him, it's is still all about the student.  We want to help by adding our advanced curriculum, educational model and server systems to the mix and bring back the special sauce.  Small sponsorships will keep these students excelling in ways most schools can only dream about.

Note: We are a private teaching facility.  At the moment we are not an accredited educational institution, but we have advanced facilities for teaching small groups of students and both Nancy and myself have extensive teaching backgrounds...myself as full time faculty and senior curriculum developer at the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston.  As a sponsor, you will receive continuous progress reports on your student as well as access to many of the projects all the students produce as well as our monthly newsletter.  We are in the process of registering as a L3C so your sponsorship can be tax-deductable
